This summer, let's go to Cu Lao Xanh - Why not?
When people think of Quy Nhon, famous spots like Ky Co, Eo Gio, or Hon Kho usually come to mind. However, if you are looking for an untouched island paradise away from the tourist crowds, there is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. This summer, let’s go to Cu Lao Xanh—why not?
Also known as Nhon Chau Island, Cu Lao Xanh is a small, enchanting island covered in lush green vegetation and surrounded by crystal-clear waters. Here is your ultimate guide to exploring this pristine oasis this summer.

Part 1: Top Attractions on Cu Lao Xanh Island
1. Cu Lao Xanh Lighthouse (Puzini Lighthouse)
Built by the French in 1890, the Cu Lao Xanh Lighthouse is the proud symbol of the island and one of the oldest lighthouses in Vietnam. Standing at 119 meters above sea level, this majestic structure features a striking black-and-white striped design blending Gothic and Oriental architecture.
Climbing up to the lighthouse rewards you with a breathtaking, panoramic view of the entire island, the endless East Sea, and the distant coastline of Quy Nhon.

2. The Sovereignty Flagpole
Located just a short walk from the lighthouse on a rocky hill is the National Sovereignty Flagpole. Built in 2015, this proud landmark overlooks the vast ocean and serves as a meaningful symbol of national pride and territorial sovereignty. It is also an excellent, breezy spot to catch the early morning sunrise.

3. Thao Nguyen Rock Park (Bai Da Thao Nguyen)
Thao Nguyen Rock Park is a whimsical natural wonderland filled with thousands of unique stone formations in various shapes and sizes. Over millions of years, the ocean wind and salty waves have carved these rocks into giant artistic sculptures.
Walking through this rugged, grassy landscape feels like stepping onto a different planet, making it a dream location for photography lovers.

4. Coral Reef Snorkeling at Coral Beach (Bai San Ho)
The marine ecosystem surrounding Cu Lao Xanh is remarkably healthy and vibrant. Head to Bai San Ho to immerse yourself in the cool, ultra-transparent water. Just a few meters from the shore, you can easily spot colorful coral reefs, sea anemones, and schools of small tropical fish darting through the rocks.

Part 2: What to Eat on Cu Lao Xanh Island
As a remote, self-sustaining fishing community, Cu Lao Xanh offers some of the freshest and most authentic seafood experiences in Central Vietnam.
-
Stone Snail (Oc Vu Nang): A unique, cone-shaped snail found only along rocky island cliffs. When steamed with lemongrass or grilled with scallion oil, its meat is incredibly sweet, firm, and crunchy.

-
Moon Crab (Cua Mat Trang): Similar to Phu Quy, the moon crabs caught around Cu Lao Xanh are famous for their rich, sweet flavor and firm texture.

-
Squid and Sea Urchins (Nhum Bien): Enjoy ultra-fresh grilled squid or sea urchins grilled with raw eggs and scallions right on the beach.

Where to Eat: You can enjoy fresh meals prepared directly by your homestay hosts, or visit the small, local seafood stalls near the main pier area

Part 3: Essential Summer Travel Guide
1. Best Time to Visit
To experience Cu Lao Xanh at its absolute best, plan your trip during the summer months, from March to September. During this period, the sea is calm, the water is a brilliant turquoise color, and the weather is reliably sunny—ideal for boat rides, swimming, and outdoor exploring. Avoid visiting from October to January due to the rough monsoon season.
2. How to Get There
Cu Lao Xanh is located about 24 kilometers from Quy Nhon city center. To get there, head to Ham Tu Port in Quy Nhon:
-
Speedboat (Cano): Takes about 30 to 45 minutes. This is the fastest, most comfortable option for summer travelers.
-
Wooden Cargo Boat (Tau Cho): Takes about 2 hours. A budget-friendly, slow-travel option that allows you to experience how the locals commute.

3. Where to Stay
Because the island is strictly protected and eco-focused, there are no heavy commercial resorts. Instead, you can find clean, welcoming homestays run by local families (such as Cu Lao Xanh Homestay or Coral Homestay). Many hosts offer all-inclusive packages that include round-trip speedboat transfers, meals, and guided island tours.
4. Important Island Rules to Remember
-
Bring your ID/Passport: Because Cu Lao Xanh is an island with military and border guard significance, you must present your identification documents upon arrival at the pier.
-
Protect the Environment: The island community is highly conscious of plastic waste. Do not litter, and never break or take coral reefs home with you.
