Black Chung Cake of Muong Lo: A taste of the Northwest
Origins and Significance
The black Chung cake of Muong Lo is a specialty of the Black Thai ethnic minority residing in the Muong Lo region of Yen Bai province. According to legend, this cake originated in ancient times, linked to the story of Lang Lieu, the talented 18th son of the sixth Hung King. During the competition to choose a successor, Lang Liêu used this very cake to demonstrate his respect for heaven, earth, and ancestors.

The black Chung cake also symbolizes a harmonious climate, abundant harvests, and prosperity. Its black color, derived from traditional black sticky rice, represents the richness of the land. During Tet, the lunar new year, this cake is an indispensable offering on the altars of Black Thai people, expressing their reverence for ancestors and their hopes for a prosperous and peaceful new year.
Unique Characteristics
The black Chung cake is not only visually appealing but also captivates taste buds with its unique flavor. Its distinctive feature lies in its main ingredients. While the outer layer is made from familiar wild dong leaves, the filling is a harmonious blend of fragrant glutinous black rice, creamy mung beans, and locally sourced pork marinated with the spices of the Northwest mountains.
